This Milan Fashion Week, we attended the highly-anticipated Aigner runway show, debuting its Fall Winter 2019/2020 Ready-To-Wear Collection.

The Munich-based luxury brand showcased designer Etienne Aigner’s talent for creating elegant and sophisticated pieces for the modern woman. The venue boasted greenery, a widespread runway and intricate Italian Renaissance architecture, to set the stage for a stunning défilé of looks. Aigner’s collection effortlessly captured the multifaceted twenty-first-century woman in all of her profundity.

Aigner focused on bringing together a sequence of contemporary and classy garments fit for power, to recognize the modern woman's determination and drive to success. With an homage to German heritage, the collection featured leather garments and accessories in a variety of textures and tones, from earthy, floor-grazing coats to maroon cross-body bags.

A fresh take on the classic pantsuit made its appearance, showcasing the elegant movement of draped silk fabrics to convey the business industry's recent shift away from uniformity in professionalism.

Aigner then addressed the modern woman’s playful side by bringing youthful patterns and chromatic tones to the runway. The use of pleats was apparent, fostering a sense of whimsicalness and often tying the look together with a cult favourite for fall footwear — over-the-knee boots.

The modern woman is not static, and is rather quite composite, as are Aigner’s design methods with asymmetrical pieces.

Aigner implemented asymmetry in several garments, drawing a vertical division of the body to feature a solid colour on one half, and a patterned textile on the other.

The collection then featured an array of translucent mesh fabrics, emphasizing an elegant silhouette to represent flirtatiousness. These garments honoured the female body to convey an openness to sensuality and to a societal shift towards acceptance. Aigner’s depiction of the complexity that is a woman in its Ready-To-Wear collection is inspiring, allowing the brand to thrive once again in its favoured Fashion Week market of Milan.
